What does window replacement involve? The M.C.G process, step by step

Replacing your windows with M.C.G takes four steps: a free consultation and quote, a check measure, about five weeks of manufacturing at our Croydon South factory, and installation by our own team. Here is what happens at each step, how long it takes, and what you need to do along the way.

We have been making aluminium windows and doors in Melbourne for more than 25 years, and replacement work for homes across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula is a large part of what we do. Knowing what to expect makes the whole job easier, so here is how it works.

The process at a glance

Step What happens How long
1. Free consultation and quote A consultant visits, takes sizes and talks through your options. You get a written quote. A single visit
2. Check measure Once you go ahead, a service technician measures every opening precisely. A single visit
3. Made to order Your windows are made at our Croydon South factory to the exact measurements. About 5 weeks from the check measure
4. Installation Our team removes the old windows and installs the new ones. Confirmed in your quote

Step 1: Free consultation and quote

It starts with a visit to your home. A consultant looks at the windows you want to replace, takes sizes and talks you through the options: window styles and configurations, glass, including double glazing, and powdercoat colours. If you are thinking about replacing a sliding door or back door at the same time, this is the time to mention it, so the frames and colours match throughout.

After the visit we send you a clear, no-obligation written quote. There is no cost for the consultation and no pressure to go ahead.

To get the most out of the visit, it helps to know which windows you want replaced, what is wrong with them now (draughts, noise, sticking or rattling frames), and whether you have a colour in mind. You can browse the options on our colour chart beforehand.

Step 2: Check measure

Once you accept the quote, a service technician visits to measure every opening precisely. It is a separate visit for a reason. The consultation gives you a price before you commit, and the check measure gives our factory the exact measurements it needs to make each window to fit.

Every window we make is built to suit its opening, so you get a precise fit and a clean finish, rather than a standard size packed out to fit the hole.

If your job involves changing the size of an opening, or your home is under a heritage overlay, this is also when anything that needs checking with council comes up. Replacing a window with one the same size usually does not need a building permit, and we will tell you if anything on your job needs checking.

Step 3: Made to order in Croydon South

Your windows are made at our factory at 85 Merrindale Drive, Croydon South, to your exact measurements, using our NATA-tested aluminium systems. Most window replacement companies buy their windows in from a supplier. We make ours, so we control the quality and the timing from start to finish.

Manufacturing typically takes about five weeks from the check measure. We confirm the timing in your quote, and every M.C.G window carries a WERS energy rating for its measured performance.

Step 4: Installation

Our own team removes your old windows, installs the new ones and leaves a tidy finish. Because the same business that makes your windows installs them, there is no handover between a supplier and a separate installer, and one team is responsible for the result.

Most homes can be occupied while the replacement work is being done.

On the day, it helps to clear furniture, blinds and curtains away from the windows being replaced, and to make sure our team can get to each window from outside as well as inside.

How long does window replacement take overall?

Most of the time is the five weeks of manufacturing. The consultation, quote and check measure happen around it, and installation itself is the shortest part. We confirm the timing for your job in your quote.

After installation

Your replacement windows carry a 7-year warranty, with a 12-month warranty on moving parts. Powdercoated aluminium does not need repainting. A wash with warm water and a mild detergent every few months, clear tracks and a light spray of dry silicone on locks and rollers once a year will keep them working smoothly. Our maintenance guide covers the full routine.

Frequently asked questions

How long does window replacement take?

Our windows are made to order in about 5 weeks from the check measure. Most homes can be occupied while the replacement work is being done. We confirm the timing in your quote.

Why are there two visits before my windows are made?

The first visit, the consultation, gives you a written quote before you commit. The second, the check measure, happens once you go ahead, and gives our factory the precise measurements for every opening, so each window is made to fit.

Can I stay in my home while my windows are replaced?

Yes. Most homes can be occupied while the replacement work is being done.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Victoria?

Replacing a window with one the same size usually does not need a building permit. You may need one if you change the size of the opening or alter the structure, and homes under a heritage overlay may need planning approval. We will tell you if anything on your job needs checking with council.

Do you replace the whole window?

Yes. We make a complete new window to suit your opening, remove the old unit and install the new one. Because each window is made to measure, you get a precise fit and a clean finish instead of patching over worn or failing frames.
